A New Accessible Business Mark®SMP Consultancy was opened in 2002 by its Director, Susan Pattrick. During her varied career, Susan developed an empathy with the people she looked after and it was only natural that after leaving her last employer, a large corporate organisation, she decided to set up SMP Consultancy Ltd.
Our aim is to assist service providers and manufacturers of products to remove the barriers that prevent disabled people from accessing a company’s goods, services, facilities, and premises to the benefit of both.
In 2007, we developed a business mark called the Accessible Business Mark®.
It is backed by a number of large organisations such as Limbcare, The Disabled Living Foundation, Enabled by Design, The Royal Association for Deaf people, The Helen Hamlyn Centre, and many more.
The Accessible Business Mark® is aimed at employers to encourage them to inform disabled people that they have improved their goods, services, facilities, and premises. Many businesses do not realise that there is around £60 billion or thereabouts in the disability market. How many businesses actually encourage use of their business by disabled people, and by excellent customer care to gain a share of that market?
We believe that with the aging population and more people acquiring disabilities as they grow older that more and more companies will want to encourage more disabled people and their families to use their services. They can do this by buying into the Accessible Business Mark®. It communicates good practice and tells disabled people that a business has gone a long way towards meeting their requirements and that the business adheres to standards set by the British Standards Institute and other organisations to enable them to shop or use services in comfort.
We have also developed an Accessible Business Mark® for the design of products, so once they have gone through the rigorous testing required by the Government for health and safety we ask our panel of experts to assess them for use-ability by disabled and elderly people.
The Accessible Business Mark® for the service industry and retail organisations will be mystery shopped at least once a year if not more and if the standards are not met or there is a complaint we will take it up with the company and ask them to address the problem to ensure the credibility of the mark.
It has taken a long time to get this to market and now is the time for you to play your part and get involved. At less than £1 per day for each premise, it represents excellent value and a commitment to ensuring corporate social responsibility and inclusively for all customers.
