Kitty Connell 100th Birthday
Kitty was 100 on 27th January 2012. She Had her 1st amputation in July 2006 ( 94) due to bad
ulcers on her leg which would't heal/ bad circulation. The doctors all told her that because
of her age she would never walk again because the prothesis would be too heavy for her.
Little did they know the strength & determination that Kit had. Everyday she would go to 'Westmarc'
gym in the Southern General Hospital ( a gym designed for amputees) & practice with the
prothesis as her ambition was to walk into my house at 'Xmas , which you can
see from the 2nd picture that she did.
She was a great inspiration in the hospital & the gym & was asked by nurses to speak to patients
who were still to go through their operations .She is always saying that if she was a bit younger
she would like to help fellow amputees with counselling.
Her 2nd amputation was in 2009( 97) & she still came up smiling although would now be confined to
a wheelchair. She lives by herself(by her own choice)& has carers 3 times a day, just to make food.
She transfers to a chair every night to watch the television in a bit more comfort & puts herself to bed
every night(that's frightening to watch as she launches herself onto the bed!!!!)
She still enjoys a good social life going to the theatre, watching tennis, shopping, Age UK club
& Rainbow
Cluband she has a befriender who calls on her once a week for a chat. You need an
appointment to see her!!!
